Why does my cat like to sit at the top of the stairs?
Cats are known to enjoy detachment and are very independent. It could be because of that or it may simply be a desire of warmth that pushes your cat to a higher surface. Do you have a window at the top of your stairs that the sun frequents? If so, I may have found your answer. Or it could be that your home is too loud and noisy for the poor thing and he wants some peace and quiet. Cats are very sensitive creatures. In fact, the ancient Egyptians worshiped them as gods! It could be that you have a desturbing presence in your home. It could be anything from an aggravating teenager to a ghost that bothers your cat. As funny as the latter reason sounds, cats where always coupled with witches. It could be that they have a sixth sense, so to speak. Just like humans, animals also crave a little solitude. It is most probably that. And maybe, just maybe, it wants to show off its "freedom" to you. With some animals, they want to show you that they can get along by themselves just fine. Well, that's all I can think of. Good luck!
